Home-schooling (If you Want to Call it That)

We are using the same curriculum we were using at home on days that James has to work and then on his days off we work on site-specific lessons. For example yesterday we read several books about WWII and then walked down to the USS Lexington and spent lots of time exploring the ship.

The Walk to our field trip:

Right away we ran in to World War II veteran Don Bidding who was happy to answer a few of the girls' questions. (Absolutely the coolest part of our day!)

This really struck a nerve with me. All healthcare workers should really think about this:

This was really interesting to see after learning about Kamikazes with them just an hour before.

Introduction

James and I recently decided to sell all our furniture, put our house on the market, and begin living a nomadic life. To do this, James took a job as a travel nurse. Most assignments will be thirteen weeks long. We have already been homeschooling our kids for two years so that is not new. What is new are the amazing learning opportunities that we have already begun to benefit from only three days in. I'll post more on that later. For now I just want to say that my main reason for starting this blog is that we needed an easy way to keep a journal of our travels that didn't need to be packed and taken with us every three months. Also, while we were researching the idea of travel nursing as a family, we couldn't find a lot of information from people who were actually doing it. Hopefully, those who are thinking of doing something similar will find this blog helpful. And finally- I want to be able to keep friends and family updated without being a super annoying Facebook friend. So if you are interested in seeing where our travels take us and the interesting things we are all learning about feel free to follow us here. I'll also try to get James to write some posts about the actual travel nursing aspect of it for those who may be interested in that.

Settling In

We took one last picture in our empty house as we were walking out the door carrying the last of the boxes.

Seven and a half hours later we were pulling in to our new home: North Beach, Corpus Christi

We spent our first full day (which was Mother's Day) exploring the area right around us and swimming. North Beach has a 2 mile long beach walk perfect for running or for walking to nearby restaurants, the USS Lexington or The Texas Aquarium. At one end is a park that we have been walking to so the kids can play. Yesterday Taylor skated the whole way there and then we took our shoes off and walked back along the edge of the water picking up various "treasures" along the way. While we were there, I met another mom who happened to also be named  Jennifer, had 2 daughters and was pregnant with her third, and was traveling along with her husband who works for an oil company. I was happy about this because I had told the kids that we are going to learn to be aggressive at making friends!

Getting the girls to get their school work done is easy when I'm able to lure them with swimming in the pool or a walk on the beach after school is over.

One of our first priorities was to locate the nearest library, acquire library cards and make friends with the lovely ladies that work there. Here, Addi and Alyssa are signing their names to the back of their cards. Taylor's life is complete here in Corpus Christi now that she has found the "Hank the Cowdog" section in the library.
